Curls.

I have a love hate relationship with my curls!  It’s as if they have a mind of their own. They are completely spiraled and gorgeous one day (“…Yeah, I meant to do that.”).  Then the next day, my hair is completely dry, frizzy and flat (Ch-ch-chia!).  I’ve spent a lifetime trying to perfect the art of styling my curls.  Here’s what I’ve discovered.

  1. The haircut! Cutting curly hair is much different than cutting straight hair.  It’s important for your stylist to understand framing and layering.  If not, after your hair dries, it looks like you put a lampshade on your head and walked straight out that door! Also stay away from the texturing shears!! They separate the curl causing frizz. No bueno!
  2. Moisture, moisture, moisture!  There are tons of curly hair shampoos and conditioners out there, but try and stick to those that are sulfate free.  The others have harsh acids that strip your hair of its natural oils.  *Tip: Use a wide tooth comb in the shower to detangle curls and try to avoid using a brush. Yep! The brush separates the curl. FRIZZ

I am currently using Ouidad Products.  The shampoo and conditioner below are the bomb dot com.  I linked them to the site if you’re interested.

3. Styling technique. Remember moisture?  Curly hair tends to be on the drier side. So I recommend using a leave-in conditioner while your hair is still wet and raking it through with your fingers.  Now it’s time to apply your styling gel/mouse/cream etc. Which ever you prefer. I’ve tried them all. Apply product in sections using the same raking technique you did with your leave-in conditioner.

Below are the products I’m currently using.

4. The drying process.  After applying the product I like to let my hair air dry while putting on make-up.  It allows time for the curl to form.  Do you own a diffuser? You should! This is a must! When using the diffuser flip your hair forward and scrunch dry. Flip back over and repeat the same process. Also shimmy the diffuser to the scalp of your head to create some height.  Once dried and styled to your liking, you can use some hairspray to set in place.  Diffusers are sold anywhere! Ulta, Target, TJMaxx, Sally’s, Walgreens, etc.

Check these out!  I love my CHI blow dryer and I absolutely love this hairspray my mother-in-law introduced to me!
